February Squad Moves

As a club we have some fantastic young swimmers, from our little tadpoles right through to our performance squads. Whilst its very easy to recognise the medals and titles, its important to remember that your time in swimming is very much a journey; with many small, but significant triumphs along the way, all contributing to the wider goal.

All too often its those small, but all important achievements which get overlooked, and we think its just as important to celebrate these!

So to kickstart this, commencing this month, we will be publishing those young swimmers whose hard work and dedication has meant that they have progressed to the next level in their swimming development, giving them a big shout out and well done!

So without further ado, big congratulations to the following swimmers  on their recent squad promotions – keep up the good work!

Emory Eagles v Delta State

Our very own Adam Charlton hit the swimming headlines last month, topping the podium in both the 100 and 200 Fly events at an inter-university  NCAA divisional meet hosted by the University of West Florida.

Adam, competing for Delta State delivered some tremendous performances it seems, clocking up times of 51:75 & 1:54:31 (!), helping his team to take the Emory Eagles men’s team by 20 clear points ( after finishing some 7 places behind them at the same championships last year!).

It’s fantastic to hear of Adam’s ongoing ( and very exciting by the sounds of it) success, and I’m sure it’s not the last we will hear.

Linda Carlo Visit – Sunday 14 February 2016

Linda Carlo Visit

Chester-le-Street ASC swimmers alongside Linda Carlo

Further to our recent posts regarding Linda Carlo and her 250 mile year long swimming challenge, Linda was able not only to squeeze in a visit to the club during her trip up north at the weekend, but she kicked off the second half of her challenge by swimming her 126th mile in Chester waters!

Originally from Chester-le-Street, swimming teach Linda embarked on her ambitious challenge in July of last year, prompted by her previous weight loss success and inspired by Justin Osmond (of the Osmond family fame) who completed a similar 250 mile challenge (albeit on dry land and over 8 days!).

Linda plans to complete her challenge in August of this year, and is bang on track to do so. The mid way point of Linda’s journey took her to the Angel of the North on Saturday, where she met Joanne Milne, ambassador for the Hearing Fund UK ( the charity Linda is raising funds for), having swam 125 miles.

Not to let an opportunity pass us by, we contacted Linda to come visit our swimmers on Sunday, and being the lovely lady she is, she very kindly agreed to make an unscheduled stop!

What better way to start off the second half of her challenge than with our swimmers, who it seems were fascinated with just how many lengths 250 miles actually was (now how many training sessions would that equate to I wonder!).

All in all, it was great to meet Linda and I’m sure she inspired our swimmers as to what it is to set yourself a goal and then have the commitment and determination to see it through.

We hope to see Linda again later in the year, when an official fundraising event is being planned in support of the Hearing Fund UK, but in the meantime we wish her the very best of luck with the rest of her challenge.

You can follow Linda’s progress on her blog via the link below.

My Sponsored 250 Mile Swim

map-progress

Linda Carlo, a swimming teaching veteran of 22 years, is currently embarking on a mammoth 250 mile swim through England, as part of a combined personal weight loss challenge and charity fundraiser. Linda set herself the gruelling challenge last July, when she decided to do the 250 mile sponsored swim in aid of The Hearing Fund UK.

Swimming five times a week (with a few extra miles here and there) she aims to complete the swim in a year, and half way through the challenge she is bang on schedule to complete it on Friday 6th August 2016!

After swimming 122 miles, Linda finally reached our neck of the woods; and being originally from Chester-le-Street, it clearly brought back happy memories. Not to let an opportunity pass us by, we have arranged a special “stop off” at Chester-le-Street Pool this weekend, where Linda has very kindly agreed to come and swim ” a mile”  with our swimmers!

Linda will be coming to swim with our A and B squad swimmers on Sunday 14 February 2016 between 2pm and 4pm (exact time to be confirmed asap) and I’m sure you will all do us proud in supporting her in this fantastic challenge.

As this is very much an unscheduled stop (!) we are hoping to invite Linda back to the pool later in the year for an “official fundraising event”, further details for which will be published as soon as available.

In the meantime, you can follow Linda’s progress on her blog, where Chester-le-Street ASC even get a mention!

Brandon, who was competing in his first championships, maintained his qualifying position to finish 5th in a time of 1:35:98, whilst James and Luke finished in 7th and 9th positions.

The second session got off to a flying start, with 4 top 5 positions in the Boys 200m Fly event.

Highlights

Day two started well, boasting four top ten finishes in the Boys 200m Free event. Ten year old Brandon Pye started the run finishing in 9th position in a time of 2:41:09, followed by Jacob Openshaw (12) who later finished in 10th position. Fourteen year old Daniel Butler brought home the first of 2 medals in the event, taking silver in a time of 2:10:60, before Oliver Wallace (15) took bronze in a time of 2:09:83. A great start to the day.

After an exciting race, Thomas English (12) took silver in a new personal best time of 1:14:98, with Joseph Fairbairn (12) finishing in 7th position in a time of 1:20:01. Fourteen year old Luke Pye came next, almost matching his final qualifying time to finish in 10th place, followed by Matthew Hunt (15) and Jamie Keyworth (17) who both finished in 8th position in their respective finals.

So overall a strong start to the championships. Hopefully, we will have more great results to publish following the second weekend of championships at the end of the month, and we wish those who weren’t fit enough to compete in this weekend’s competition a speedy recovery in time for round two!

Rag Bag Thanks!

A big thank you to all who contributed to the Rag Bag Fundraiser,  so far we have raised over £130.00 with still more to come!

A fantastic result, and we’ve done our bit for the environment with all that recycling!

Although not everything donated could be accepted for the purposes of fundraising, we’ve made sure that everything was put to good use; so things like sleepwear, bedding and tablecloths were donated to the Children’s Society and anything else which couldn’t be used was taken to the Oxfam textile recycling banks – so nothing was wasted!

As it’s so easy to do, we’ve decided to do it as a permanent fundraiser.

Bags will be available for collection from the sweet shop every Friday.

So when you or family/friends need to offload your outgrown/outloved clothes & shoes, we will simply turn your clothes into cash for the club1

Just think…..

  • 1 Bag = 1 Swim Hat
  • 3 Bags = A Championship Competition Entry
  • 5 Bags = 1 Shirt

So bear us in mind the next time you need to get rid of anything and we will be more than happy to take it off your hands.

However, please could we ask that you only include the following items, as we are unable to accept any other items:

  • Wearable clothing and shoes
  • Belts, Bags, Hats & Accessories
  • Soft Toys

We are unable to accept SLEEPWEAR, BEDDING, TABLE LINEN ETC.

As always we thank you for your support and a HUGE WELL DONE on the money raised so far!
